Mounted Scooter

Learning Experience
Pretend trips to places of interest and now drive-through shopping with the new treehouse next door.  We play road rules too.

Materials
  • Scooter (junk)
  • Pole stirrups x 4
  • Rapid Set bagged concrete x 4 (one bag per stirrup)
Procedure
** Warning: The scooter must be securely mounted.  Kids dish out some rough treatment to play equipment.  The rear of the scooter, where the motor is, is the heaviest.  I placed one stirrup on each side of the motor to stop sideways movement, one in the centre, and one at the front.
  1. Keep the kids away at this stage due to the danger of the scooter toppling and the possibility of the kids slipping into the holes.
  2. Mark out where the stirrups are to be placed to match the layout of the bottom of the scooter.
  3. When placing the stirrups ensure the front wheel can still be turned from side to side.
  4. Dig out a hole for each stirrup.
  5. Position the scooter over the holes.
  6. Prop the scooter in place, some wood chocks may help.
  7. Bolt the stirrups to the scooter leaving them to hang down into the holes.
  8. Mix and pour the concrete into the holes.
  9. Allow 24 hours before checking the scooter can take an adult's full weight.
  10. Ensure the battery, spark plug(s), and any fuel have been removed.

One stirrup required bolting to the concrete to provide the height reach required.
